Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: In this week's Trailer Tuesdays, two Hollywood heavy hitters, Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, team up for the new gangster flick, "Public Enemies."

CAROLINE: I'm so psyched for this movie! It's a rare occurrence that Christian Bale is overshadowed on a movie poster, but in this case it's all about Johnny Depp. Bale's got more of a supporting role, and Johnny plays the real-life 1930s gangster, John Dillinger.

RYAN: There are rumors they may work together again in the next "Batman" installment with Johnny Depp as The Riddler.

CAROLINE: The costumes in this movie look phenomenal. It's very much a period piece. And I'm really looking forward to seeing Marion Cotillard, who won the Oscar for "La Vie en Rose," as Johnny Depp's love interest.

RYAN: She's one of my top five favorite actresses. I can't wait to see her in "Nine" later this year. This almost looks like a Martin Scorsese-level film. I'm uber excited for it.

CAROLINE: Well, Michael Mann is no slouch. I've loved some of his previous films, especially "Collateral," and this one could very well be great. It already has Oscar buzz. I'm actually a little surprised it's coming out now and not in the fall, but July 4th weekend is a big deal too. Check out the awesome trailer here:

RYAN: Next up is "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which is the third in this franchise.

CAROLINE: I have not seen either of the previous two, which should be no surprise to anyone. Have you?

RYAN: I think I saw the first one. These moves are actually a cute and well made and the animation is great. It's got voices from Ray Romano, Queen Latifah and John Leguizamo.

CAROLINE: And also three people we love: Jane Lynch, and SNL's Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig.

RYAN: I love the little girl squirrel in the trailer. This movie looks very cute. I'll see it if I can make the screening.

CAROLINE:
I, of course, have no interest and would rather rearrange my sock drawer. Here's the trailer:

Box Office Results

1. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," $112 million.
2. "The Proposal," $18.5 million.
3. "The Hangover," $17.2 million.
4. "Up," $13 million.
5. "My Sister's Keeper," $12 million.
6. "Year One," $5.8 million.
7. "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," $5.4 million.
8. "Star Trek," $3.6 million.
9. "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," $3.5 million.
10. "Away We Go," $1.7 million.

RYAN: It's an historic weekend at the B.O. with "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" making quite the debut!

CAROLINE: And for a movie so poorly reviewed, I guess it's an achievement. I have a baditude about it though. I can't believe so many people are interested in this crap franchise.

RYAN: Come on, you didn't even see it! The effects are amazing. Plus I seriously think it's a sign of what's happening in the world. People want escapism amongst all the sadness.

CAROLINE: You're talking about Michael Jackson, I presume?

RYAN: Yes. It's the perfect time to get out and see a big, splashy blockbuster.

CAROLINE: It might be why no one went to see the new weeper "My Sister's Keeper."

RYAN: Exactly. So "Transformers" made just over $200 mil, and it's just shy of what "The Dark Knight" made in it's first 5 days last year.

CAROLINE: That is nuts. "The Dark Knight" is such a superior film. And considering ticket price inflation and the IMAX tickets, which cost more, who knows if it really means more people actually saw "Transformers."

RYAN: I think it's incredible when a sequel does better than the first one. And this pretty much guarantees another one.

CAROLINE: Yawn. I'm over it already.

MY SISTER'S KEEPER

CAROLINE: "My Sister's Keeper" is the new dramatic weeper starring Cameron Diaz, lil' Abigail Breslin and the oldest daughter from TV's "Medium," Sofia Vassilieva.

RYAN: We heard that Dakota Fanning was originally slated for Sofia's part, but she refused to shave her head for the role of a cancer patient. So Sofia stepped right in and she done made herself a movie star.

CAROLINE: Here's the thing - even though this movie made me cry several times, I really enjoyed it; but I ask you, who's going to want to see a movie about a little girl dying of cancer?

RYAN: I prefer to cry at romantic dramas than cancer movies. But what I liked about this movie was that it had a different look, sound and feel than other movies we've seen recently. I really appreciated Nick Cassavetes's direction and creative approach.

CAROLINE: The movie got off to a little bit of a slow start, and I feared it was going to be melodramatic and overwrought. But it was actually pretty well done, and I think Cameron Diaz held her own in a dramatic role. Abigail Breslin annoyed me slightly. Her voice over at the beginning was grating; she doesn't have a very pleasant voice. But her acting was good, for sure.

RYAN: Abigail Breslin is fast approaching the annoying factor that Dakota Fanning has reached. But I just loved Cameron. She's a really good actress, and so enjoyable to watch. I know we love to see her smile, dance and giggle in romantic comedies, but I really liked seeing her do a dramatic role. It's a great genre break for her. And Jason Patric looks way hotter in the movie than he did on the red carpet.

CAROLINE: Yes, we actually got to attend the premiere for this movie and we saw the whole cast on the red carpet. We were feeling very fancy about it until we realized we were seated in the balcony with the unwashed masses. At first we were all psyched because hardly anyone was sitting up there; but then they opened it up to the public and... let's just say it was unpleasant.

RYAN: Yeah. A lot of the people were unshowered and loud and eating their dinners out of styrofoam containers and not realizing their cell phones had an off button.

CAROLINE: It was painful. Four separate cell phones must have gone off.

RYAN: And each one multiple times. I just don't understand why people can't silence their phones.

CAROLINE: Overall though, the movie seemed to be a pretty realistic portrayal of what a family goes through when someone has cancer. I don't know it from personal experience, but it seemed pretty true to life.

RYAN: I loved the soundtrack; especially that gorgeous Cyndi Lauper cover.

CAROLINE: I just kept having to brace myself for another bout of crying. This movie was just so sad. You could feel the build up coming, and you're like, "Oh God, here come the waterworks again."

RYAN: I don't cry in movies as oft as you do, but this movie even got to me a couple times. It doesn't feel too long, but it's definitely slow-paced and the topic is so mature and adult that I think it'll limit the audiences. I don't think the young girls who usually come out to see Abigail Breslin in a movie will necessarily want to see this.

CAROLINE: The only reason parents might bring their kids to this is to help them understand death or something. But I really can't imagine bringing a child to this movie. It's gonna be a tough sell.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

RYAN
: It's a beautifully articulated film that highlights some great relationships and family struggle. Cameron Diaz's performance is great, though she's really not the star of the film. Both the girls have bigger roles. I liked Alec Baldwin; he provides some comic relief. And Joan Cusack was great too. I would recommend this movie, but you could wait to see it when it's on cable. It's cinematic, but it's not as beautiful as the other Nick Cassavetes film we adore, "The Notebook."

CAROLINE:
This movie would be very difficult to watch if you've lost anyone you know to cancer. I just can't imagine seeing it if I'd had that in my life; it would be too devastating. I really liked it though, because the topic is handled so well and the performances are strong. I just don't know if it's the kind of movie where I would tell people, "Wow, you've got to go see it." It might be too painful.

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN

RYAN: "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is the much anticipated "Transformers" sequel starring Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox.

CAROLINE: Mercifully, I was able to sit this one out while you saw it, and I thank you so much for that. I just can't fathom this movie. The trailer was laughable.

RYAN: Well it's a big special effects movie targeting teen boys, and it's actually a little bit funny. But it's also dumb funny; for example, there are actually robots who fart. I was like, "Wow, seriously. We've sunk this low?"

CAROLINE: Good God.

RYAN: So some of the humor was insulting, but some was great, primarily that from Julie White. She plays Shia's mom.

CAROLINE: OMG I love her! She's in Shakespeare in the Park here in NYC right now.

RYAN: She made up for the moments of dumb humor.

CAROLINE: Let's cut to the chase - no one's getting more press these days than Megan Fox. How is she?

RYAN: She needs to quit acting. Really. She should resolve herself to a modeling career. She's no Angelina Jolie. It's not all her fault though; it's mostly Michael Bay's direction. Every shot of her is like a pin-up. It's in slo-mo, or her hair is blowing or she's dropping something and bending over to pick it up. The script is so lame that she never gets a chance to shine. And let's be honest, I don't think she can act at all.

CAROLINE: I'm not surprised to hear that. Plus the fact that she's dating Shia in this movie is pretty unbelievable. No girl as hot as her would be his girlfriend. How's he in this?

RYAN: He's great. I really think he's one of the actors of his generation. I wish he'd get his act together though; don't forget, this was the movie during which he messed up his hand in a drunk driving accident. They worked the injury into the script but in such a lame way. They just had him burn his hand, and then it was magically gauzed up in the next scene even though they're in the middle of the desert.

CAROLINE: So tell me more about the effects. That's all anyone cares about anyway.

RYAN: The special effects are pretty phenomenal. But I'd say 70% are great and 30% look cartoonish. One robot is anatomically correct, which was lame; and I'd like to know why robots have to be male or female. I'd also like to know why robots have a race. There's been some backlash about it. It's borderline racially offensive. We've reached even more comic lows.

CAROLINE: Do you think the target audience of young boys will like this movie?

RYAN: I do. Even though it's silly, it's still a big summer movie. I'm sure it'll do better than "Terminator Salvation" did. John Turturro is also in it, and he's not bad.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

RYAN: I saw it with my pal Eric who actually had Transformers toys growing up so I thought he would bring another level of assessment to this review. He thought the script was terrible and I agree. But the special effects and sound design make it a must-see on the big screen, for those inclined to see it. The sound is so good that I actually jumped a few times from that alone. Additionally, it's way too long at two hours and forty minutes. They should have cut out fifty minutes.

CAROLINE: [laughs] I'm so glad I skipped it.

New on DVD

CAROLINE: The Isla Fisher flick, "Confessions of a Shopaholic," is new on DVD today. I thought it was merely so-so.

RYAN: Are you kidding me? I loved this movie! Isla Fisher is adorable, and it had such a cute love story. And hello, Hugh Dancy!

CAROLINE: Loved the cast, but it's rated PG and was totally targeting little girls, which annoyed me. I wanted it to be edgier and more adult.

RYAN: Well, the reasons you didn't love it are precisely the reasons I did. It was fun and light and I totally recommend renting it.

CAROLINE: I suppose it's cute enough to merit a rental if you like this genre. Meanwhile, all I can think when I look at Isla Fisher is, "Oh my God, you get to sleep with Sacha Baron Cohen."

RYAN: [laughs] Another new DVD out this week is "Inkheart," which I adored.

CAROLINE: Even I liked this movie, which was shocking since it's a family film. But the premise was so cool! Brendan Fraser plays a guy who can make characters and props from books come to life just by reading aloud.

RYAN: It's based on one of my favorite books, so I was guaranteed to love it; and I'm so thrilled you did too. The movie is actually quite different from the book, but that didn't bother me because it was so good.

CAROLINE: Can we talk about how hot Brendan Fraser is in this movie? Even when he's playing a dad, I can't get enough of him.

RYAN: It co-stars Paul Bettany and even has a little cameo from his real-life wife Jennifer Connelly. I love her. And the special effects are great. Definitely see it!

CAROLINE: I wouldn't recommend this for very little kids because it had some scary parts at the end. But other than that, it's a great family film that I totally enjoyed. And I don't say that very often so you know this one must be good.

Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: Summer blockbuster season is in full swing as "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" hits theaters tomorrow.

CAROLINE: I couldn't begin to care even a little about this movie. I didn't see the first one, but I heard horrible things about it. And it was two and a half hours long! I don't have time for that unless it's a truly great movie.

RYAN: I love big summer blockbusters! I enjoy the spectacle of it all, so I could get excited for this one.

CAROLINE: I do like Shia LeBeouf, but Megan Fox is already overexposed. I still don't understand if this movie even has a plot, or if it's just all special effects.

RYAN: I know Megan Fox is gorgeous, but it's like, "Honey, you've made two movies. Why are you as famous as you are?"

CAROLINE: Because she's so hot. The end.

RYAN: [laughs] I'm sure. The trailer looks OK; I wouldn't say I'm super psyched for this movie, but I'm excited for the blockbuster-ness of it all. Check out the trailer here:

CAROLINE: Next up is "My Sister's Keeper" starring Cameron Diaz and two little girls, one of whom was supposed to be Dakota Fanning; but she dropped out of the film because she didn't want to shave her head.

RYAN: It would have been the first time Dakota Fanning and Abigail Breslin, arguably the biggest child stars out there, co-starred in a movie.

CAROLINE: But now it's Abigail Breslin and the girl who plays the oldest daughter on TV's "Medium."

RYAN: Which no one watches.

CAROLINE: I watch it, and I really like her. I think she'll be great in the role, and she was willing to shave her head, so get over yourself Dakota. I read the book this movie is based on years ago, and though I don't remember much, I can tell you it's a weeper. It's like "Irreconcilable Differences" meets "Terms of Endearment."

RYAN: I'm only interested in this movie because of Cameron Diaz. Otherwise, I couldn't really care less.

CAROLINE: I think it's interesting that she's playing a mom. That's not a role we're used to seeing her play. And I'm kind of glad she's doing a mom role, because as I said last year, she's getting a little long in the tooth to play the romantic lead in movies like "What Happens in Vegas."

RYAN: Ouch. But yes, it's true. Here's the trailer:

RYAN: Well, if this isn't a sign that the folk have missed the Bullock in the rom com genre, I don't know what is!

CAROLINE: Go Sandy! She's having the best weekend ever.

RYAN: You know, I don't know why we're all so afraid to say it but I like her in romantic comedies.

CAROLINE: Who's afraid to say it? I think she just made a big stink about the fact she wasn't doing them anymore; but maybe this weekend's B.O. will send a stiff message to her.

RYAN: It's good for Ryan Reynolds too. He doesn't always have to be in Wolverine shape to open a movie.

CAROLINE: [laughs] Honey, he is still in Wolverine shape in this movie. There were some who had hoped "The Hangover" might be #1 again, but to make $153 million in 3 weeks is a rather handsome feat.

RYAN: I can't believe "Year One" didn't even hit number 3. At least "Land of the Lost" opened at 3 when it came out a few weeks earlier.

CAROLINE: Well it's an even worse movie. I wouldn't have even put it in the top ten.

RYAN: The studio's def feeling it where it counts - big time.

CAROLINE: There's been such crappy weather in much of the country one always thinks it will usher more fans out to movies.

RYAN: Well decent weather or not, next weekend's "Transformers" will def perk things up even more.

YEAR ONE

RYAN: I always look forward to a new Jack Black movie because he's one of the funniest men in Hollywood. "Year One," however, was not all we'd hoped it would be.

CAROLINE: I'm saying it's the worst movie of the year thus far. Painful. Horrible. Excruciating.

RYAN: Oh honey. It wasn't that bad.

CAROLINE: Yes, it was. I might have giggled once at one of Michael Cera's lines, but that was it. Jack Black was totally over-the-top and oppressively unfunny. I know that's kind of his shtick, but I so wasn't having it in this movie.

RYAN: I completely disagree. There were some damning moments because of the juvenile humor - it definitely seems to target 12-year-old boys - but it also had some redeeming moments.

CAROLINE: Sure, if you like poop, fart, masturbation, circumcision and virginity jokes.

RYAN: True, those jokes were bad. But I loved Paul Rudd's cameo, and I thought Oliver Platt and Hank Azaria were brilliant.

CAROLINE: I fell asleep for most of Hank Azaria's part because I was so overwhelmed with boredom. I did like Bill Hader's cameo, even though you can barely tell it's him because of all that makeup. I'd recognize his voice anywhere though.

RYAN: He's so fab on SNL. You can't deny it's a great cast.

CAROLINE: Sure, but they were all totally wasted in this crappy movie. I know the pairing of Michael Cera and Jack Black is supposed to be quirky and comedic due to their wildly different body types and styles of humor, but it only worked as a funny visual a couple of times. For the rest of it, I was just thinking, "I can't believe I'm watching this horrible movie."

RYAN: I thought you'd like that the girl who plays Michael Cera's love interest and was in one of your favorite movies, "Atonement."

CAROLINE: OMG is that was she was from!? I couldn't place her for the entire movie. I'm so glad you just said that.

RYAN: You're welcome.

CAROLINE: I just couldn't get into one frame of this movie. And the audience I saw it with was barely laughing either. There were only a few mild chuckles.

RYAN: That's weird, because at the screening I saw, people were really into it and laughing a lot. I'm not saying I loved it, by the way; but I certainly didn't detest it like you did.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

RYAN
: It's not a great comedy, but it had some moments I enjoyed, and a lot of the performances were great. I still think Jack Black and Michael Cera had good chemistry and I wouldn't mind seeing them together again in another movie. But I really didn't appreciate the dumb, childish humor in this one.

CAROLINE: The premise of this movie is very thin. It seems like they set it in ancient times just so Jack Black and Michael Cera could wear funny costumes like loincloths. There's no real historical relevance. And it jumps around in time a lot. Basically, it makes no sense.

RYAN: It definitely missed a lot of caveman stuff that I was expecting. Instead it turned out to mostly be about Biblical times and Ancient Rome.

CAROLINE: I was appalled by this movie. I can't not recommend it enough.

THE PROPOSAL

CAROLINE: I was very much looking forward to the new romantic comedy "The Proposal" starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, both of whom are really hot.

RYAN: I am wholeheartedly disappointed that I missed this screening. I thought the trailer was great and I was really psyched to see Sandy B.'s reluctant return to the romantic comedy genre.

CAROLINE: Honey, I was totally with you on that, and I so wanted to love this movie. Sadly, I didn't. I hate to even say that, but I was watching it the whole time thinking, "I'm kind of disappointed." There are some good performances though, from the two stars and Betty White.

RYAN: I just adore that Golden Girl.

CAROLINE: The movie definitely has its moments but I wanted it to be cuter and more romantic than it was. The premise is fun; Sandra Bullock plays a high-powered book editor who forces her assistant to marry her so she won't get deported. It has "chick flick" written all over it, so I was expecting to love it. But I don't think Sandra really pulled off the bitchy boss thing because she's so sweet and sunny. And her chemistry with Ryan Reynolds wasn't all that.

RYAN: Was the movie funny?

CAROLINE: Mildly, but I thought I would laugh more. And I thought I'd be more into the love story.

RYAN: Yeah, I can see how they wouldn't have great chemistry. I don't see them as a couple; plus that have that big age difference.

CAROLINE: Maybe they're both too pretty or something.

RYAN: So is it too long? Or is the writing just bad?

CAROLINE: It's definitely not too long, but the writing is weak; which is weird because Sandra Bullock said the only reason she was willing to do another romantic comedy was because of how good this script was.

RYAN: Way to raise our expectations, Sandy.

CAROLINE: Exactly. The movie also has Mary Steenburgen, Denis O'Hare and the guy who played "Coach." The cast is great, so the movie should have been better. I'm bummed about this one. I can't fully recommend it.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

CAROLINE: I suppose it's worth seeing for die-hard Sandra Bullock fans, but for the rest of the world, it's not good enough to merit a trip to the movie theater. It was cute in parts, but I was a little underwhelmed.

RYAN: Guess we'll have to wait for the "Sex and the City" sequel.

Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: I'm excited about Trailer Tuesdays this week because the very funny Jack Black is in a new movie, "Year One."

CAROLINE: He's co-starring with teen angst heartthrob Michael Cera as some sort of pre-historic dude. I have mixed feelings about this movie. I enjoy the cast, but it looks really goofy and dumb.

RYAN: I'm feeling that too. It looks kind of cheese-tastic.

CAROLINE: Putting yourself in a loincloth and a wig is an easy, obvious way to get laughs. These guys are both funny, but their comedy styles are so different. Michael Cera is so subtle, and I don't think anyone's ever accused Jack Black of subtlety.

RYAN: I hope this movie has some good moments and doesn't just make dumb jokes about cavemen or something. Maybe there will be a cool dinosaur.

CAROLINE:
I'm hoping for one or two intelligent moments. Could be a long shot. Check out the trailer here:

RYAN: Next up we have a romantic comedy, "The Proposal," starring Sandra Bullock, who's returning to the genre after she vowed she never would.

CAROLINE: Yeah, but she's all out there in the press saying it's not really a "romantic comedy" but rather just a "comedy." I don't know who she thinks she's kidding. It's clearly a love story with her and Ryan Reynolds. She plays his power bitch of a boss, and he's her assistant. But I'm super excited for this movie, and I can't even get over how great she looks at 44!

RYAN: Doesn't he seem too young for her in this movie? He's like, 32.

CAROLINE: Yeah, but that's the whole point; she's his boss. You've never heard of an age difference before?

RYAN: OK fine. You know I love romantic comedies so I'm psyched for this one too. I've been missing her in the movies and I'm ready to see her back on the big screen. Here's the trailer:

8. "Terminator Salvation," $4.7 million.
9. "Angels & Demons," $4.2 million.
10. "Drag Me to Hell," $3.9 million.

CAROLINE: I must say I'm rather impressed with the lil' comedy that could. "The Hangover" hits number one for two weeks in a row.

RYAN: It's not a shabby achievement by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just saddened that no one gave "Imagine That" a chance this weekend. I mean - not even in the top 5? Come on!

CAROLINE: Get over it.

RYAN: Perhaps Eddie Murphy is not as good for a movie as studios would hope. Maybe with a different actor, the lovely film might have done better.

CAROLINE: You'll never know. Back to "The Hangover" - I hope this movie's success ups the ante for one Bradley Cooper.

RYAN: His star is indeed rising. And how could it not be?

CAROLINE: He's hot. He's talented. He's a pretty decent actor. We haven't seen him really go out on a limb, acting-wise, but he may soon get that chance.

RYAN: I'd give it to him, if I were directing a movie.

CAROLINE: Me too... and then some.

RYAN: "The Taking of Pelham 123" didn't even come in #2.

CAROLINE: It might do okay though with word of mouth. I really enjoyed it.

RYAN: This coming weekend, it's between comedy with "Year One" and romance with "The Proposal."

CAROLINE: I bet "Year One" will take it.

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123

CAROLINE: "The Taking of Pelham 123" is a remake of a '70s film, and it stars Denzel, who needs no last name, and John Travolta who's sporting some '70s facial hair even though the movie takes place in the present.

RYAN: Since I didn't get to go to this screening with you, my most important question off the bat is, how bloated does John Travolta look?

CAROLINE: He's not too bad, actually. He's never going to be as skinny and sylph-like as he was back in the day, but for him he's looking pretty good. He must be on a low-salt diet. And he's not afraid to have his receding hairline out. But the real star of the show is Denzel.

RYAN: Was his performance better?

CAROLINE: I sure think so. He's just so amazing in everything he does; so stoic and understated. He's a master. He plays a subway controller who has to deal with a hostage situation and he's just flawless. Never over-the-top - which is more than I can say for Johnny T.

RYAN: Oh no. Was he overdoing it?

CAROLINE: In some scenes, yes. He plays the villain and he clearly got very into it. I was like, "Take it down a notch, honey." He had some funny lines though, and a few times he was genuinely scary; but for a lot of it he was kind of hysterical and all over the place. Some people even laughed inappropriately at his lines.

RYAN: He needs to simmer down. Was the movie action-packed and exciting?

CAROLINE: Very. It was all about NYC and the subways, so as a New Yorker, I loved that. The audience was totally cheering and eating it up too. It takes place in real time, which made it very tense and exciting.

RYAN: Would you call it a big summer movie? Does it have special effects?

CAROLINE: Not really. It's not so much a blockbuster as just a good thriller. There are definitely a couple car chases and some gun play and violence, but it's not "Transformers" or anything. There's some good action though, and lots of edge-of-your-seat moments.

RYAN: How badly does it make you want to go back and rent the original 1974 version?

CAROLINE: [laughs] Not that badly. I think John Travolta's facial hair more than made up for the '70s aspect.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

CAROLINE: I really liked this movie. I'm not sure if it has huge buzz though, because people are more excited about all the summer blockbusters and sequels that are out now. But it's a good, intense flick and Denzel is a joy to watch. I would have enjoyed it more if you were with me, just because it's so tense and exciting that you want someone to share it with.

RYAN: Aw, thanks honey.

IMAGINE THAT

RYAN: I thought the trailer for "Imagine That" was so cute; and to be honest, it was because I heard the word "princess" in it.

CAROLINE: Oh honey. I, of course, ran screaming from this movie because it's for children. Eddie Murphy is really doing a lot of this genre lately.

RYAN: I'd like to move away from calling it a children's film because it's really a family film. And like the best family films, it will appeal to adults as well as kids.

CAROLINE: Maybe I'm just bitter because the premise of this movie was already
done on "Medium" and I love that show.

RYAN: Well, I don't watch it so it's new to me. Can we take a minute to talk about the fact that Eddie Murphy is looking as good, if not better, than he has in his entire life?

CAROLINE: Well, as Oprah says, black don't crack.

RYAN: [laughs] He has a shirtless scene in this movie and I'm telling you he's in Hugh Jackman "Australia" shape. He's looking fine. I'm shocked to say it.

CAROLINE: I'm shocked to hear it! How's the little girl who plays his daughter?

RYAN: She's equally gorgeous. She beat out over 3000 other girls for the role. I think she's going to be The Next Great Young Actress. Dakota Fanning should be jealous. She's so cute and she gave a great performance.

CAROLINE: Thank God it wasn't Willow Smith. So is the movie funny or heartwarming or both?

RYAN: It played with every emotion. Eddie Murphy plays a single father and he doesn't have a girlfriend in it, so it doesn't focus on a love story. It is, however, a very romantic film because it's very much like a fairy tale - just inspiring and sweet.

CAROLINE: I'm so glad you enjoyed it... without me.

RYAN: It's seriously one of my favorite movies of the year. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. It didn't lag at all. It was shot beautifully and it's very sentimental, and I don't know why but it really struck a chord with me. I might get the DVD.

CAROLINE: Wow, that's a commitment.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

RYAN: It's an adorably sweet, sentimental movie. Its strength is really in the story and casting. It has just the right amount of drama and joy with a touch of magic.

New on DVD

CAROLINE: One of my absolute favorite movies of last year, "Gran Torino," is new on DVD this week. I still don't understand why it was completely snubbed at the Oscars.

RYAN: Yeah, it was a great one. Evidently there's no stopping Clint Eastwood.

CAROLINE: This movie is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I laughed, I cried, etc. I can't recommend it enough. Except for that Asian kid; his acting was horrendous.

RYAN: [laughs] Indeed it was. But the girl who played his sister or cousin or whatever she was totally made up for it. She was amazing.

CAROLINE: Please rent this movie if you haven't seen it yet!

RYAN: Next up is "The International" starring your boyfriend Clive Owen. It also has Naomi Watts, but her part is tiny.

CAROLINE: I really liked this movie. Clive Owen is gorgeous as always. And the shoot-out scene in the Guggenheim is awesome!!

RYAN: That was one of the coolest scenes ever in a movie. This movie came out in February, which was surprising because it's really good. We never expect to see a movie of this caliber in February.

CAROLINE: It's one of the few very good movies of the year so far. Definitely worth a rental.

RYAN: It's a little bloody, but if you can handle some violence, you'll be fine.

CAROLINE: And did I mention how hot Clive Owen is?

RYAN: Yes, honey, you did.

Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: I like the weeks when there are two very different genres of new releases, and that's exactly what we have this Trailer Tuesdays.

CAROLINE: Let's start with "The Taking of Pelham 123," which is a remake of a 1974 movie. It stars John Travolta and Denzel Washington, but I don't feel like it's got a ton of buzz. Have you heard anyone talking about it?

RYAN: Not really, other than the usual magazine coverage. I think it's partly because John Travolta isn't doing much press for the film, for personal reasons we all know about.

CAROLINE:
He didn't even show up to the premiere. The trailer is pretty engaging though. It looks like an intense movie.

RYAN: We haven't really seen a movie of this genre since "Taken" earlier this year, so I'm on board.

CAROLINE: It's a hostage movie, basically, and I'm going in without much knowledge about it. All I know is John Travolta looks like a leather daddy on the poster.

RYAN: Amen! The trailer is pretty good. Check it out here:

CAROLINE: Next up is "Imagine That," a kids' movie with Eddie Murphy. You know you couldn't pay me to see this.

RYAN: Because it co-stars a little girl as Eddie's daughter who has an imaginary princess in her life, I'm all over it.

CAROLINE: [laughs] The premise of the movie is something about how her imaginary world can predict important company mergers that help out her father's business; but they already did that on TV's "Medium," so I'm hardly impressed.

RYAN: Well, for those of us who don't watch "Medium," which LBH, is most of us, this will be like the big screen adaptation.

CAROLINE: I don't really dig on Eddie Murphy these days.

RYAN: For me, the trailer is so cute that I wouldn't miss this one. Watch it here:

Movie News - Sex and the City 2

CAROLINE: You know what movie I'm already very much dying to see?

RYAN: I can't even see past July at this point.

CAROLINE: [laughs] I'm looking quite a bit further - how about the upcoming sequel to "Sex and the City - The Movie"?

RYAN: OMG! That's gonna be amazing. But it's not out till, like, May 2010.

CAROLINE: Ok. I'll settle down.

RYAN: Well they're notorious by now about keeping all things tightly under wraps... but at least Mr. Eye Candy, Gilles Marini, who we all liked on TV's Dancing with the Stars, has said he's down for a return if they'll have him.

CAROLINE: Um... yes, please! But I remember hearing Jennifer Hudson during an interview on Access Hollywood saying she'd like to reprise the role of Louise.

RYAN: Oh God no. She was the weak link in the last film.

CAROLINE: Agreed. I'm sure they won't let that happen again.

RYAN: I'm psyched for it too!

Box Office Results

1. "Up," $44.2 million.
2. "The Hangover," $43.3 million.
3. "Land of the Lost," $19.5 million.
4. "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," $14.7 million.
5. "Star Trek," $8.4 million.
6. "Terminator Salvation," $8.2 million.
7. "Drag Me to Hell," $7.3 million.
8. "Angels & Demons," $6.5 million.
9. "My Life in Ruins," $3.2 million.
10. "Dance Flick," $2 million.

RYAN: Well someone is making a lot of dough off the sure-fire hit that is "Up" and by someone, I mean Disney/Pixar.

CAROLINE: #1 for the second week in a row is quite the achievement during the summer blockbuster weeks; however, with the week's biggest release being "Land of the Lost," it's totally justified.

RYAN: You're just hating on that movie.

CAROLINE: And clearly I'm not alone. The reviews were pretty much universally heinous, and the B.O. reflects that this weekend.

RYAN: I like the statistic that "Angels & Demons" is the first movie of 2009 to earn over $400 million worldwide.

CAROLINE: That is noteworthy.

RYAN: Someone asked me what my fave movie of the year was so far and I didn't have an answer. I usually have a movie that I'd fallen in love with by June but one hasn't struck me yet. I'm probably just gonna wait till the new "Harry Potter" opens next month.

CAROLINE: You're so biased.

UPDATE:

CAROLINE: "Up" is no longer the #1 movie of the weekend! After performing better than expected on Sunday, "The Hangover" is actually the winner with $45 million.

RYAN: Amazing!

LAND OF THE LOST

RYAN: I'm totally bummed that I missed the "Land of the Lost" screening because even though Will Ferrell annoys me, I had high hopes that this would be a fun dinosaur movie.

CAROLINE: Well, I'm here to tell you that you missed nothing. This movie sucked. It was a total waste of time. I'm now fully convinced that Will Ferrell has lost it completely and is officially in Ben Stiller land - especially if he continues to make movies like this.

RYAN: I hear you; he's become such a one-trick pony like Ben. How was Anna Friel though? I love her so on "Pushing Daisies."

CAROLINE: She's fine. Very skinny. Her cheekbones were jutting out so much I wondered if she has cheek implants. I thought it would be fun to hear her with her real British accent, but it actually kind of annoyed me. I liked her much better on "Pushing Daisies."

RYAN: Oh well.

CAROLINE: Basically it's just a really dumb movie. It's kind of kids' movie because the TV version of "Land of the Lost" was a kids' show; but the jokes are a little bit dirty and poop and sex-related, which isn't very kid friendly. It totally doesn't work.

RYAN: What about the special effects and the action?

CAROLINE: There's a very cool T. Rex that looks great, but not much else. I guess I thought it was going to be either a cute comedy or a cool action movie with comedic elements, but it's neither. It's just an inappropriate kids' movie.

RYAN: That's the worst case scenario.

CAROLINE: Will Ferrell, of course, had to be shirtless again.

RYAN: Oh. My. God. Will it never stop?

CAROLINE: You have to look at his fat gut and gangly legs more times in this movie than I care to count. There's a running gag with a song from "A Chorus Line" that totally made me laugh the first couple times and made me think of you, but then the payoff wasn't even good.

RYAN: What a disappointment. Do you think the kids will love it though? Will it be another "Night at the Museum"?

CAROLINE: I dunno, does "Night at the Museum" have a lot of poop and fart jokes in it? This movie is a little too dirty for kids. It's a really bad combo of too raunchy for little kids and too lame for adults. I would have thought our age group was the target audience since we all watched the show in the '70s, but evidently not.

RYAN: What about all the characters we remember so fondly like Chaka and the Sleestaks?

CAROLINE: They're there, but they're nothing like my memory of the TV show. Granted, I watched it a long time ago. Overall, there were one or two cool scenes and I chortled a few times, but the rest was bad. Just bad. I even dozed a little.

RYAN: I'm saddened to hear that.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

CAROLINE: It's a dumb movie. I wouldn't recommend it at all, even for young people. They should go see "Up" instead. Will Ferrell needs to switch gears pronto. This crap isn't working anymore.

THE HANGOVER

CAROLINE: "The Hangover" is a new bachelor party comedy from director Todd Phillip of "Old School" fame, and mercifully it doesn't star Will Ferrell.

RYAN: [laughs] Instead it's got Bradley Cooper who's much easier to look at.

CAROLINE: It co-stars Ed Helms who's on "The Office" and a couple other guys you'll recognize who aren't super famous. It's also got Heather Graham. Long time no see, honey!

RYAN: Seriously. What happened to her career? I really liked the guy who plays the groom, Justin Bartha, because he was Nic Cage's assistant in the "National Treasure" movies. This is a bigger role for him, and it's a really, really funny movie.

CAROLINE: I laughed a lot. It's silly and certainly not a great movie by any means, but I didn't care at all because I was too busy laughing.

RYAN: There were a couple offensive moments of gay humor that I could have done without. Hopefully, in time, that will happen less and less in movies. But putting the politics aside, it's a very funny, well written, directed and edited movie. Some of the things that happen are almost as shocking as things you would see in a Sacha Baron Cohen movie.

CAROLINE: The soundtrack is fab too; lots of great pop hits you'll recognize. This movie is what it is and doesn't aspire to be more, which is great. It's just the story of a crazy time in Vegas and how the guys try to piece together what they did the night before. I love how the movie jumped back and forth in time. A lot of what happens to the guys is absurd, but a lot of it is totally believable too. The entire audience was howling with laughter.

RYAN: It was some of the loudest laughing I've ever heard at a screening. Some of the supporting roles were so hilarious too, like the crazy Asian guy.

CAROLINE: Yes, and I looooove Rachael Harris. She plays Ed Helms's shrewish girlfriend.

RYAN: There's some great physical comedy too. There are a few dumb moments, but none of it is lame fart jokes. The humor never gets ridiculously dumb.

CAROLINE: It's very R-rated, especially in the credit sequence, which I loved. It's just a good old-fashioned comedy about drunken debauchery.

RYAN: It's definitely a bro comedy but there are some romantic comedy elements in there too. It's bookended by a wedding, and it covers a lot of relationship and friendship issues. It will appeal to both guys and girls.

-- BOTTOM LINE --

CAROLINE: It's a hilarious movie that I would definitely recommend to people who can handle raunchy humor and some boob shots. Bradley Cooper is hot and Ed Helms was so funny. The four guys had great chemistry and all worked really well together. I laughed a lot.

RYAN: I'm sure it'll do really well at the box office. I'd recommend it too for a mature audience.

Movie News - Yet Another HAMLET

RYAN: They're making "Hamlet" yet again. And by they, I mean Hollywood.

CAROLINE: Wow. Some stories just keep inspiring people I suppose. This one's going to be set in contemporary America though - so that could be fresh.

RYAN: All the kids reading it in school will def wanna run out to see it. Emile Hirsch signed on for the title role and it's gonna be directed by Catherine Hardwicke who most recently did "Twilight."

CAROLINE: Not sure about Emile Hirsch in the role, but I like that it's being adapted from the original Shakespeare by the man who wrote "The Painted Veil."

RYAN: That movie was so good!

Trailer Tuesdays!

RYAN: It's a red letter day this Trailer Tuesdays; Will Ferrell is starring in a new movie.

CAROLINE: [laughs] Is it that time of year again? Actually, I'm kidding. I'm kinda looking forward to "Land of the Lost" since it's not another one of his sports parody movies. Plus, I thoroughly enjoyed the TV show in my youth.

RYAN: Me too! I just remember Cha-Ka. But I love that they'll be bringing some humor to the movie, and not just trying to make it an action film. I think it'll be a lot of fun.

CAROLINE: There's part of me that wants to rebel against that because my memories of the show are more of excitement and awe and fear... but it was such a cheesy show with terrible costumes and effects, so 25 years later the humor is pretty much built in. There's also kind of a "Jurassic Park" moment in the trailer that looks great.

RYAN: I think with a different actor in the lead role, the movie could have gone in a more serious or intense direction; but they've opted for light and funny instead, and I think it'll be cute. I'm almost super excited that Anna Friel from TV's "Pushing Daisies" is in it. Check out the trailer here:

CAROLINE: Next up is a movie I'm much more excited for, "The Hangover." I love an R-rated summer comedy.

RYAN: When I first heard about this movie, I wasn't really interested. But after seeing the trailer, I had to admit it looks really fun.

CAROLINE: It totally reminds me of "Very Bad Things," that Peter Berg movie of yore, because it's also about a bachelor party in Vegas where things go awry. But I think "The Hangover" won't be quite as dark. I predict hilarity and mayhem with a couple dark moments thrown in for good measure. It stars Andy from "The Office" and the very hot Bradley Cooper.

RYAN: It looks like a fun buddy comedy, but I think women will enjoy it too. And with a cameo from Mike Tyson, how can you go wrong?

CAROLINE: I like that it's an ensemble cast with no one super famous in it. It makes it more identifiable that way, like this could be a group of guys you know who had a crazy night in Vegas.

RYAN: Totally. This movie's got big buzz as the sleeper comedy of the summer. Here's the trailer:

Movie News - Nicole Kidman is Replaceable.

RYAN: Hooray for Lucy Punch!!

CAROLINE: Who in the world is Lucy Punch?

RYAN: She's a British actress I adored in the film "Ella Enchanted." She played the evil step-sister to Anne Hathaway in it.

CAROLINE: Never saw it.

RYAN: Oh you should. It's like a cute "Ever After" kind of movie.

CAROLINE: So why are you cheering her today?

RYAN: I haven't seen her in much since then but Woody Allen just cast her in the role Nicky Kidman dropped out of in his upcoming movie.

CAROLINE: Ok. I can appreciate this is good news for you.

RYAN: Woody releases barely any info about his movies, but we do know she's going to play a call girl.

CAROLINE: Oh Woody.
